Classical Samurai Martial ArtsIn San Francisco's Mission District
Yachigusa-Ryu Aiki-Bugei teaches classical Japanese martial arts in a small non-commercial dojo. These traditional martial arts were developed by medieval samurai for use in combat. They were the life-protection skills of professional warriors. Yachigusa-Ryu preserves these arts in their historic context while teaching effective fighting skills. Students practice classical techniques in the dojo, but what they learn continues to have contemporary relevance and applications. We offer classes in the Mission District of San Francisco teaching traditional aiki/jujutsu and weapons arts. Our dojo only instructs a handful of students at a time. We do not enter competitions; nor do we assign colored belts or rankings. The curriculum includes a wide range of empty-handed techniques, from soft and elegant aiki throws to brutal joint locks and vital-point striking. The weapons side of the art consists mainly of two-person drills and one-person forms with sword or spear, as well as weapon takeaway and retention techniques. Classes in the unarmed arts of jujutsu and aikijutsu are at 7:00-9:00 PM on Mondays and Thursdays. Classes in the weapon arts—including kenjutsu (sword), sojutsu (spear) and other weapons—are held 7:00-9:00 PM every Tuesday and Friday, and on odd-numbered Saturday mornings at 10:00 AM. The school is located near Mission St. and 20th St. in San Francisco. Directions to the dojo are available here. Guests and prospective students are always welcome. To make an appointment to visit the dojo or to get more information about the school, call Gary Moro, Sensei at (415) 821-1902. See the Frequently Asked Questions page for more information.
